Tried to make this today and a little disappointed! The crumb topping didn’t turn out as intended at all. In fact, it melted so much in the oven that it flowed over the side of the pie dish and into the bottom of my stove. I wouldn’t even say I overfilled the pie. In fact I removed about a cup of apples to not have the pie so full. But had no idea that this could have happened. Huge burnt sugar mess to clean on the bottom of the stove. Hopefully the pie tastes good, not knocking the recipe just would have wished for more instruction.

I'm so sorry that happened Lindsay. I will update the recipe with a few more instructions. If there is anything else you have that could help readers in the future let me know, I am happy to share in the post. I don't want anyone having a bad pie!

I can't wait to try this with my fresh apples! Do you blind bake the pastry first? Scared of a soggy bottom!

Hi Hayley. I do not. If you are worried about that when when you are loading up the crust with the apples I would suggest not to pour them in but use a spoon to scoop. There will be some water in the bottom of the mixing bowl that you don't want in your crust. Hope you enjoy the recipe!

This pie is delicious! To be honest I was a bit leery because of the topping. I have tried many crumb toppings and they never turn out right. This one is perfect. I don’t boil the filling but I do mix up the filling and let it sit about an hour before putting it in the crust. Just the way my grandmother and my mom did it. It makes more juice. Those asking about making ahead of time, just chill the pie without the topping. Then add the topping when you are ready to bake

Do you use salted or unsalted butter?

I do use unsalted butter but I also prefer this pie to be sweet. If you don't have a big sweet tooth then you can use salted butter. Hope you enjoy it!

I think you can. I have not tried in the freezer but I did make the recipe and before baking place in the fridge over night. If you are worried about the pie crust getting soggy you can try making just the filling and freezing that. Thaw it out and bake when you are ready =) Hope you enjoy the recipe Lulu!

Hello! Should the pie pan be buttered or lined with shortening before placing the crust in it?

You can lightly butter your pan before placing crust. Mine came out fine without any but it will help for sure. Hope you enjoy the recipe Jessica!

Sounds wonderful. Is it possible to reduce the sugar?

Yes. A lot of my readers reduced the sugar and loved the pie. I may just like it on the very sweet side =)
