Doughnuts are a classic dessert that my family loves!

We'll eat them for breakfast or just about any time of day!

These Chocolate Doughnuts are baked in the oven, not fried! They taste amazing, and topped with a chocolatey glaze with sprinkles your family will love this recipe too and not just for breakfast.

How to make Doughnuts in the oven:

One thing about doughnuts are they are usually friend.

Well I have found the best recipe for making them at home in the oven!

These doughnuts will be more like cake than a fried doughnut, and I LOVE cake doughnuts the best!

    Ingredients:

    For the Doughnuts

    • All-purpose flour - sifted flour that has been scooped and leveled so you do not have a dense doughnut.
    • Baking Powder
    • Baking Soda
    • Cocoa Powder - unsweetened coca powder is best for this recipe.
    • Salt
    • Egg
    • Sugar
    • Plain Greek Yogurt - yogurt will add moisture to your doughnuts and this also replaces the buttermilk most doughnut recipes call for.
    • Canola Oil or Butter - oil or butter can be used in this recipe. If using butter make sure it is melted and cooled before adding to the dough.
    • Milk
    • Vanilla Extract

    For the Chocolate Glaze

    • Semisweet Chocolate Chips
    • Unsalted Butter
    • Heavy Cream
    • Sprinkles (for topping)

    Ingredients for Chocolate Doughnuts

    Directions:

Step One - Preheat your oven to 350°F. Prepare a donut pan with nonstick baking spray or grease with oil.

Step Two - In a large bowl, whisk all-purpose flour, baking powder, baking soda, unsweetened cocoa powder, and salt. Make sure it is mixed together well.

Step Three - Beat the egg with sugar in a medium mixing bowl.

Step Four - To the same mixing bowl add yogurt, oil, milk, and vanilla extract and whisk until combined.

Step Five - Pour your wet ingredients into your dry ingredients and mix until just combined

    • Tip: You want your batter to be thicker for doughnuts. Using the proper amounts of baking soda and powder will cause them to rise in baking. A more liquid batter will be runnier and could run over in the baking process.

adding wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and whisking together

Step Six - To fill the donut pan use a spoon or use a piping bag and fill each cavities with batter ¾ way full.

piping the doughnut batter into the doughnut baking tray

Step Seven - Bake for 10-12 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Allow to cool for 10 minutes before flipping the pans upside down over a wire rack.

    Chocolate Glaze:

Step One - In a microwave-safe bowl, place the chocolate chips, butter, and heavy cream. Microwave for 30 seconds. Stir well and continue to microwave in 15-second intervals until the chocolate is completely melted.

Do I need a doughnut pan to make these doughnuts?

The answer to this is no you do not need a doughnut pan for this recipe, however I do recommend on.

You can get a doughnut pan on Amazon for a relatively inexpensive cost.

If you do not want to buy a doughnut pan, you can use a muffin pan instead.

Here is how you use a muffin pan to make doughnuts. You will need the muffin pan, tin foil, and cooking spray.

Step One - Cut pieces of tin foil to about double the size of your muffin holes.

Step Two - With your index finger in the center of the tin foil form the foil around your finger making a raised center for your doughnut hole.

Step Three - Place the tin foil in the muffin hole, with your raised middle in the center of the pan. Form or fold the tin foil around the edges of the muffin hole making your mold.

Step Four - Spray your tin foil doughnut molds with cooking spray to prevent sticking on the tin foil during baking.

    Storing your doughnuts:

If you doughnuts happen to last longer than the day you baked them, you are going to want to store these in an air tight container.

Due to the frosting, a zip lock bag will not be the best option for storing these.

Put the container in the refrigerator and they will last about 3-5 days.
