Holiday baking has begun and we watch a ton of Christmas movies while we bake. I love baking with my kids as they have a ton of fun helping me, and it is a great time to spend with the family.

One of our favorite movies is How the Grinch Stole Christmas so I decided to make some treats for when we watched the movie. I also made some Grinch Popcorn for our movie night.

How to make Grinch Rice Krispie Treats:

Ingredient Notes:

You will need to make Rice Krispie treats then cut them into rectangles, and also make the candy coating.

Directions:

Rice Krispie Treats:

To get started we are going to make the Rice Krispie treats. To save time you can but prepare treats and then decorate them. Either way will work!

ingredients for rice krispie treats

Step One – Prepare a 9-inch dish with parchment paper letting some paper overhang and set aside. In a large saucepan melt unsalted butter over medium/low heat.

Step Two – Once butter is melted add in 8 oz. of marshmallows. Stir constantly until marshmallows are melted.

Step Three – Remove saucepan from heat and add in all Rice Krispies cereal and all of the remaining mini marshmallows. Gently fold together until all cereal is coated.

Step Four – Pour everything into your prepared dish and gently press into place until it’s evenly spread throughout your dish.

Step Five – Allow to set for about 1 hour then use the overhang parchment paper to pull your Rice Krispies out of the pan and slice to serve.

Candy Coating/Icing Directions:

Now that your Rice Krispie treats are ready we can decorate them. This is the fun part, and my kids love helping here!

Step Two – Next you want to place the candy melts in a microwave-safe bowl. Cook for 30 seconds at a stirring between. This could take up to 3 minutes until fully melted and smooth. Once melted add the coconut oil to the melted chocolate and stir.

Step Three – Next prepare your sucker sticks by placing them into the chocolate about half an inch and then slip the sticks into the middle bottom of each Rice Krispie treat. Then you can place the Rice Krispie treats on the prepared baking sheet and chill for about 5 minutes.

  • Tip: Be careful when inserting the sticks not to break or crush the Rice Krispie treat.

Step Four – Place the melted chocolate into a tall cup and dunk each treat about ⅔ of the way into the chocolate. Then remove from the cup. To make sure chocolate is even be sure to lightly tap the bare end of the stick on the counter.

  • Tip: If your chocolate seems thick while dipping, add more coconut oil and reheat for a few seconds. This will help thin it out and make it easier for dipping.
  • Tip: Be sure to use a cup or dish wide enough to accommodate the size of the Rice Krispie treats. However, don’t make it so wide that your chocolate doesn’t go deep enough for dipping.

Step Five – Place in your sucker stand and chill for about 10 minutes or until hardened.

Step Six – Next we are going add some design to our treats. To do this you want to place the remaining chocolate into a frosting bag and use the scissors to cut a small tip off the bag. Then lay the pops flat on the prepared tray and drizzle the chocolate over the top of each pop and immediately add a heart sprinkle to the upper-right corner of each treat.

  • Tip: When drizzling, you want to partly go down both sides of the treat, but don’t go all the way down to the pan or you’ll end up with spikes out the side of your treats.
  • Tip: If your chocolate drizzle dries too quickly for your heart to stick, simply add a bit of the leftover melted chocolate to the bag of each heart and then add it to the treat.

Step Seven – Return the treats to the fridge to chill for another 5 minutes, or until hardened. Enjoy!

FAQs:

What else can I use besides Sucker Sticks or Sucker Stands?

This recipe can be made even if you do not have sticks or a stand. You best option would be to put the candy coating on plate with no raised edges. Insert a fork into the bottom of the Rice Krispie instead of a stick. Prepare a baking sheet with parchment paper. Dip or roll the front top and sides into the candy coating and then allow to harden. Once hardened dip the back of the Rice Krispie treat.

I don’t have Red Heat Sprinkles, what should I do?

“Well, in Whoville they say – the Grinch’s small heart grew three sizes that day.” – Dr. Suess

The Grinch is a classic tale of Christmas spirit and love winning over even the meanest of creatures. But do not fret, if heart sprinkles you forget. There are many other treats you can use.

  1. Sprinkles – Use any sprinkles you want. Holiday ones or not, the sprinkles bring out a fun colorful addition to your green popcorn.
  2. Holiday M&M’s -These Christmas M&M’s go great with candy coated popcorn as well. Add before the melted candy hardens to stick to the popcorn better.
