These Candied Yams are my favorite side dish for Thanksgiving. They are so simple to make and have the best sweet taste paired with my other savory side dishes on Thanksgiving day.

No matter when you are making these yams you are going to love them.

How to make Candied Yams:

This is a pretty easy side dish to make. All you need to do is peel and slice your sweet potatoes. Layer them in a casserole dish and then top with your sliced butter. Top with the brown sugar, salt, and cinnamon mixture then bake. Once baked top with your mini marshmallows and then broil to toast them! Enjoy!

Ingredients:

  • Yams or Sweet Potatoes
  • Butter
  • Brown Sugar
  • Salt
  • Ground Cinnamon
  • Mini Marshmallows

Directions:

Step one: Get started with preheating your oven to 400 degrees and prepare an 11″x7″ baking dish with nonstick cooking spray.

Step two: Next peel and slice yams or sweet potatoes into rounds then add them to your prepared dish.

  • Tip: Slicing all yams or sweet potatoes to be a similar size will help them all cook evenly.

Step three: Next slice your butter and add to a casserole dish with potatoes. Then add in brown sugar, salt, and ground cinnamon and mix it all together and to coat potatoes.

Step four: Now it’s time to bake. Place your dish into your preheated oven and bake for 40-50 minutes until potatoes are tender.

Step five: Remove potatoes and top with mini marshmallows. Broil on high for 30-40 seconds until marshmallows are brown.

What is a Yam?

Yams are hard to find in America unless you shop at a specialty store. 95% of yam crops are grown in Africa. If you can’t find them I generally use sweet potatoes instead. While sweet potatoes are different they are the closest thing that you can find in your everyday grocery store.

  1. These were great! I left off the marshmallows, the sweet potatoes were rich, sweet and sticky. I will definitely be making these again!
