This Dutch Apple Pie Bread had diced apples folded in and topped with a buttery crumble then baked. It makes the perfect dessert or sweet breakfast served with fruit or yogurt.
What is the difference between a Dutch apple pie and a regular apple pie
The difference between a regular and Dutch apple pie is simply the topping. A Dutch apple pie will have a sweet buttery and brown sugar crumble while a regular apple pie has a pastry topping. My recipe Dutch Apple Pie is one of my favorites and was the inspiration for this bread recipe.
Make apple bread from scratch
Step One: Let’s get started by preheating your oven to 350 degrees. Next, you will want to prepare a bread ban with non-stick cooking spray or parchment paper.
- Pro Tip: Using parchment paper could help with easy removal after packing. Leave some overhang to make it easy to grab and remove when done.
Step Two: Now use your stand mixer or hand mixer to cream together butter and sugar. Once they are combined and smooth go ahead and add the milk and egg then vanilla and continue to mix until well combined.
Step Three: In a separate bowl whisk together flour, salt, and baking powder. Once that is whisked you can slowly add this to your wet ingredients and mix until combined. Being careful not to over-mix.
- Pro Tip: Over-mixing could cause your bread to sink in when baking so be sure to just mix until your ingredients are combined.
Last before you place it in the baking pan mix in diced and peeled green apples.
What apple is best for baking
I find that Granny Smith apples work best for this bread recipe. If you want to use a different apple it would change the taste slightly but here are others I would suggest.
- Honeycrisp Apples
- Fuji Apples
- Gala Apples
Now place all the batter into your prepared bread pan. Next up we will work on the topping, this is what will make your apple bread into Dutch apple bread.
- What I Use: I used a standard 9″x5″ bread pan for this recipe.
Streusel topping
Step Four: For topping add all ingredients to a mixing bowl. Using clean hands use your fingertips to pinch and mix until your topping is crumbly.
Once your topping is crumbley you can sprinkle it on top of your bread.
Baking Directions
Step Five: Place your bread into the preheated oven and bake for 55-60 minutes until a toothpick can come out clean.
- Baking Tip: You can remove and cover with foil then continue to bake to prevent your topping from burning.

- How should I store my bread? Wrap your bread in foil or plastic wrap once cooled and leave on the counter for 2 days. To keep longer wrap well once coked and then place in the refirgerater.
- Can I freeze this recipe? Yes to freeze this bread allow it to cool once cooked. Wrap it tightly with plastice wrap then place in a freezer safe air tight container or in a large freezer bag. Keep in the freezer for 1-2 months.
- Can I use another type of apple? While I believe granny smith to be the best type of apple for this recipe you can use other types. Honeycrisp, gala, or even Fuji would work but could chage the taste.

Ingredients
Bread:
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter
- 1 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup milk
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 2 cups green apples, (diced and peeled)
Topping:
- 1/2 cup flour
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, (cubed and cold)

- Use a stand mixer or hand mixer to cream together butter and sugar for bread. Add milk and egg then vanilla. Continue to mix until well combined.

Hello! I was thinking about freezing this bread to gift to others for Thanksgiving although there were no instructions on the thaw or re bake process. Is there any sort of basic instructions on how that is done?
Is the butter supposed to be softened? It doesn’t say. I wanted to check 😉
Yes, that would be fine. You have to mix the butter, so if it’s softened that would be ok!
Love the recipe! But the title is a misnomer. Dutch apple pie has cream poured into a vent hole in the top crust toward the end of baking. FRENCH apple pie has a streusel topping.
Can you freeze
Hi Tommie, I have not yet tested this bread for freezing but I imagine you can freeze it like any other bread.
