This Slow Cooker Green Bean Casserole is creamy, comforting, and easy. Just load the crockpot, and your holiday side dish is ready while the oven stays free!

This Slow Cooker Green Bean Casserole is a creamy, comforting holiday side dish that frees up your oven when it is needed most. Tender green beans simmer in a rich, savory sauce and finish with a crunchy topping, just like the classic casserole everyone loves. It takes only a few minutes to put together, so you can spend less time in the kitchen and more time with your guests.
Why This Recipe Works
This recipe moves a Thanksgiving favorite into the slow cooker, which saves valuable oven space and keeps the casserole warm until you are ready to serve. It uses simple ingredients and almost no prep, so it is easy to add to a busy holiday menu. It is also a great potluck dish, since it travels well right in the slow cooker. Because it uses full cans of beans and soup, there are no leftover partial cans to deal with.
Green bean casserole is one of my favorites. It’s a classic that I remember eating growing up. I made the same recipe that my mom did and still love it.

Ingredient Notes:
French Style Green Beans – Drain them well. Well-drained beans keep the casserole from turning soupy.
Cream of Mushroom Soup – Cream of chicken soup works as a substitute if you prefer a milder flavor.
Seasoning – I use onion powder, garlic powder, salt and pepper. Adjust the salt to taste, especially since canned soup and beans already carry some sodium.
French Fried Onions – Added near the end so they keep some texture instead of going soft the whole cook time.

Step by Step Instructions:
Mix the Base In a large bowl, combine the drained green beans and cream of mushroom soup.
Recipe Tip
Make sure your green beans are well drained before mixing. Extra liquid is the main reason this casserole turns out too soupy.

Season the Mixture Stir in the onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
Add to the Slow Cooker Transfer the mixture to your slow cooker and spread it into an even layer.

Cook Cover and cook on low for 5 to 6 hours, until heated through and bubbly.
Add the French Fried Onions About 30 minutes before serving, sprinkle the French fried onions over the top.

The Paper Towel Trick:
For crispier French fried onions, lay a paper towel over the top of the slow cooker before putting the lid on (make sure it does not touch the food).
The paper towel absorbs the condensation that would normally collect on the lid and drip back down, which is what makes toppings go soft. Just be sure the lid still seals tightly over it.
