The best Sausage Gravy recipe, it’s simple to make and full of flavor. The perfect breakfast recipe and one that you are going to love. Serve on top of biscuits!
This recipe is one that was passed down to me from my Granny. I loved staying the night at her house on the weekends. I always woke up to the most amazing smells coming from the kitchen.
Of course, at Granny’s house I was able to sleep in until whenever I wanted, and she still always had breakfast waiting on me. It’s one of my favorite memories of her and this recipe brings me back.
How to make Homemade Sausage Gravy:
Start by cooking your ground breakfast sausage in a large skillet. Once it is cooked slowly add the flour until it absorbed into the sausage.
Next, you will slowly and continuously stir in the milk.
You will need to stir constantly as the gravy thickens. If it is too thick you can add more milk to thin it out.
Once it is thick and the consistency of gravy you desire, season with salt and pepper. Serve over warm biscuits and enjoy!
Ingredients:
- Pork Breakfast Sausage – I use mild sausage, but you can use spicy sausage if you want a little kick.
- All-Purpose Flour – used for thickening the gravy. Gluten free flour will also work if you choose to use that.
- Milk – If you use too much milk it will make the gravy really runny. Make sure you use enough milk to make the gravy the consistency you desire.
- Salt
- Pepper – Use as much as you need for the desired taste. I like a heavy peppered gravy, so I use extra.
- Warm Biscuits – I used store bought biscuits, but you can make homemade biscuits if you prefer.
Directions:
Step One – Cook and crumble sausage in a large skillet.
Add in flour a little at a time and mix until all flour is absorbed.
Step Two – Stir in milk. Keep stirring constantly until the gravy has started to thicken.
Recipe Tip
Add more milk here as needed. This will control the how thick or thin your gravy is.
Step Three – Season gravy with salt and pepper. I like a heavily peppered gravy, but you may want to add a little and taste if you are not a big pepper fan.
Step Four – Serve gravy on a warm biscuit and enjoy.
What to serve with your Homemade Sausage Gravy:
This is a good enough breakfast just by itself, but you can also serve it with some additional items to make it a breakfast feast!
Serve with eggs made however you like. Add some bacon and fresh fruit and this is an amazing spread!
What Milk should I use for Sausage Gravy:
I have made this recipe with different milks and while whole milk makes the best choice for a rich and creamy gravy, other milk can be used.
I used skim milk, and it turned out fine just not as rich.

This looks delicious and I can’t wait to try it. But, I noticed a slight typo in step two. You have keep staring constantly, and I think it’s supposed to be stirring.
Haha, sometimes auto correct gives me a good laugh!! Thank you Katie! Updated and I hope you love this recipe =)
