ingredients for the Slow Cooker Creamy Chicken Pasta.

Ingredient Notes:

  • Chicken Breast – Boneless, skinless chicken breasts become incredibly tender in the slow cooker and shred easily into the creamy sauce.
  • Alfredo Sauce – Gives the red sauce its creamy finish without completely covering up the tomato flavor.
  • Petit Diced Tomatoes – Tomatoes add extra texture and tomato flavor to the sauce. If your family prefers a smoother sauce, you can leave them out.
  • Marinara Sauce – Use a jar of your favorite marinara sauce. Since this makes up most of the flavor in the recipe, choose one your family already enjoys.
  • Shredded Mozzarella – Melts into the tomato sauce and gives it a rich, creamy texture while balancing some of the acidity from the tomatoes.
  • Bow Tie Pasta – Bowties hold the creamy sauce especially well.
  • Spices – Dried Basil, Dried Oregano, Garlic Powder, Salt and Pepper

Step Two – Add in Alfredo sauce, diced tomatoes, marinara sauce. Cook on low 6 hour or until chicken is cooked through.

Once tender and cooked through shred chicken.

Can I use jarred pasta sauce?

Yes. Jarred pasta sauce makes this recipe especially easy. Marinara, traditional tomato basil, or garlic pasta sauce would all work well.

Step Three – Cook pasta to package directions, drain, and add to slow cooker.

Top with shredded cheese and place lid on until cheese is melted. Serve and enjoy.

What pasta is best with creamy tomato chicken sauce?

Short pasta shapes such as penne, rigatoni, rotini, bowties, or cavatappi are great because they hold onto the creamy sauce in every bite.

Tips for the Best Creamy Chicken Pasta

  • Cook the pasta separately and just to al dente – Add it in at the end so it doesn’t get mushy; it’ll soften slightly once mixed into the warm sauce.
  • Use a pasta sauce you already love – It provides much of the flavor, so a jarred sauce you enjoy works great.
  • Shred the chicken before adding the creamy ingredients – This helps everything mix together evenly.
  • Loosen the sauce if needed – If it becomes too thick after adding the pasta, stir in a splash of pasta water, chicken broth, or heavy cream.

FAQs

What is creamy red pasta sauce called?
A tomato-based pasta sauce with cream is often called a creamy tomato sauce or pink sauce. This recipe uses the same idea but turns it into an easy slow cooker dinner with tender shredded chicken.

Can I put uncooked pasta in the slow cooker?
I recommend cooking the pasta separately. Cooking pasta directly in the slow cooker can make it too soft and cause it to absorb too much of your creamy tomato sauce, leaving less to coat the chicken.

Can I make Slow Cooker Creamy Chicken Pasta ahead of time?
Yes. You can prepare the chicken and creamy red sauce ahead of time and store it in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Cook the pasta fresh and toss everything together when you’re ready to serve.

Notes

Storage and Reheating
Refrigerator
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
Freezer
For the best results, freeze the chicken and creamy red sauce without the pasta. Once thawed, prepare fresh pasta and toss it with the reheated sauce.
Reheating
Reheat leftovers slowly in the microwave or on the stovetop. Creamy pasta sauce will thicken as it sits, so add a splash of milk, cream, or chicken broth while reheating if needed.
