ingredients for the Tater Tot breakfast Casserole.

Ingredient Notes:

  • Milk – Helps create a softer, fluffier egg mixture.
  • Eggs – Hold everything together and bake into a fluffy, satisfying casserole.
  • Ground Sausage – Pork sausage adds classic breakfast flavor, but turkey sausage or spicy sausage work great too.
  • Colby Jack Cheese – Shredded, for melty, gooey goodness throughout.
  • Frozen Tater Tots – Create a crispy, hearty base and make this recipe incredibly easy. No need to thaw before using.
  • Seasoning – I used garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.

Tips for Best Results

  • Drain well: Brown and drain the sausage thoroughly to prevent excess grease in the casserole.
  • Shred your own cheese: Freshly shredded cheese melts smoother than the pre-shredded kind.
  • Let it rest: Allow the casserole to rest a few minutes before cutting for cleaner slices.
  • Check for doneness: Insert a knife in the center to make sure the eggs are fully set.
  • Watch the top: Cover loosely with foil if it starts browning too quickly.

No. Use them straight from the freezer.

  1. I am wondering if you have ever tried making this ahead and serving the next morning? What about freezing it? It looks delicious, but I am concerned that the cooking time would take too long on school mornings. Thanks!

    1. I have yet to freeze this one but since the tater tots are already frozen I think it would work well. You can also make the night before, cover it, refrigerate, and then bake in the morning.
