ingredients for the Chicken Tater Tot Casserole.

Ingredient Notes:

  • Unsalted Butter – Used to cook the chicken and adds richness to the base of the casserole.
  • Chicken Breast – The hearty protein base of the casserole; cooked and diced to layer throughout the dish.
  • Onion Powder and Garlic Powder – Adds savory flavor to the chicken as it cooks.
  • Salt and Pepper – Base seasoning to balance the richness of the sauce and cheese.
  • Cream of Chicken Soup – Creates the creamy, savory sauce that holds the casserole together.
  • Sour Cream – Adds extra creaminess and a slight tang that balances the richness of the cheese and soup.
  • Frozen Mixed Vegetables – Adds color, texture, and nutrients, turning this into a more complete meal.
  • Ranch Seasoning – Adds a tangy, herby flavor that ties the whole casserole together.
  • Shredded Cheddar Cheese – Melts into the sauce and on top for a rich, cheesy flavor throughout.

Tips for the Best Chicken Tater Tot Casserole

  • Dice or shred the chicken into bite-sized pieces so every scoop gets some in it.
  • Don’t thaw the tater tots before adding them. Starting frozen helps them crisp up instead of turning soggy.
  • Arrange the tater tots in a single, even layer so they cook and crisp evenly.
  • Add the last layer of cheese in the final few minutes of baking so it melts without overcooking the tots.
  • Let the casserole rest for 5-10 minutes after baking so it sets up and is easier to serve.

Reheating: Oven recommended to keep the tots crispy; microwave works but will soften the topping.
