Christmas Puppy Chow are a great treat that is easy to make. Made a little different from my classic Muddy Buddies, this Christmas version will be great for the holidays.
Puppy Chow or Muddy Buddies are one of my favorite treats to make. The kids ask for them all the time, so my classic Muddy Buddy recipe is made often.
Well now that it is Christmastime making these Christmas Puppy Chow or Christmas Muddy Buddies are one of the first things on my baking list.
Christmas Movie Snack
Nothing beats a Christmas movie and Christmas Puppy Chow to snack on. Puppy chow has always been a favorite of mine and it’s the perfect treat to get the kids involved and helping in the kitchen.
It is a very easy recipe to make. Just follow these directions and enjoy!
How to make Christmas Puppy Chow:
Melt the candies in two separate bowls. Mix the green and red in with the Chex cereal and then add into a Ziplock bag to mix the powdered sugar.
Put the coated Chex cereal on baking sheets to dry.
Ingredient Notes:
- Chex Cereal: you will need to use 1 whole box.
- Green Candy Melts
- Red Candy Melts
- Peanut Butter: Smooth peanut butter is the best for this recipe.
- Butter: I used unsalted butter.
- Powdered Sugar: also know as confectioners’ sugar or icing sugar.
Directions:
Step One – Prepare two baking sheets with parchment paper and set aside.
Step Two – Divided Chex cereal evenly into two large mixing bowls.
Step Three – Place green candy melts, 3 tablespoons of peanut butter, and 1 tablespoon of butter into a microwave safe bowl.
Stir well then place in the microwave and heat for 15 seconds then stir again. Continue this until melted and smooth.
Recipe Tip
If you don’t want to use a microwave you can melt all of this in a saucepan on the stove top. I’d recommend using a double boiler just to be safe.
Step Four – Pour the above mixture over one of your bowls of cereal and gently mix to coat cereal is the green mixture.
Add your green coated cereal to a plastic bag.

Make sure to mix gently to you don’t crush your cereal.
Step Five – Add 1 cup of powdered sugar to your green cereal. Seal baggie and shake to coat cereal.
Place these onto one of your prepared baking sheets to set for at least 1 hour.
Step Six – Repeat the process with your red candy melts adding them to a microwave safe bowl along with 1 tablespoons of peanut butter, and 1 tablespoon of butter.
Heat in the microwave for 15 seconds at a time staring between until melted and smooth.
Step Seven – Now pour the red mixture over your remaining bowl of cereal and mix to coat.
Once coated place in a different baggie with remaining 1 cup of powdered sugar. Zip baggie and shake to coat.
Step Eight – Place on your other baking prepared baking sheet and allow to set.
Allow each color to set separately for at least 1 hour. Once set mix your colors together and serve.
Do I need to refrigerate this recipe?
These muddy buddies can be stored at room temperature for up to 7 days in an airtight container.
My bet is you will eat them pretty quickly but store them in an airtight container in the fridge and they will last longer than 7 days.
Can you freeze Puppy Chow?
Yes, you can freeze this dessert.
Store them in a freezer safe container or Ziplock bag for up to two months.
Is Puppy Chow gluten-free?
This would depend on the ingredients you use.
If you need this to be gluten-free make sure to buy Corn Chex Cereal.
Also double-check all other ingredients to make sure they are made gluten-free.
Ingredients can vary from brand to brand.
