These Cranberry Meatballs are a sweet and tangy appetizer that disappears fast at holiday parties and game day get-togethers. Frozen meatballs are coated in a simple cranberry sauce, so there is almost no prep and no fuss. Serve them straight from the slow cooker with toothpicks, and you have an easy crowd-pleaser that looks festive and tastes even better.

Slow cooker meatballs are one of my go-to recipes, especially around the holidays. I first started making these for Thanksgiving as an easy appetizer, and they disappeared so fast I had to start doubling the batch every year after that.

Why This Recipe Works

This recipe uses just a handful of pantry staples and frozen meatballs, so it comes together with almost no effort. The sweet and tangy sauce coats every meatball, and the slow cooker keeps them warm for hours, which makes serving a crowd easy. It is also an easy way to bring a festive appetizer to any gathering without spending time in the kitchen.

ingredients for the Cranberry Meatballs.

Ingredient Notes:

Frozen Meatballs – The easy, ready-made base of the recipe. They heat through right in the sauce, so there is no browning or rolling needed.

Cranberry Sauce – Provides the sweet, tart fruit flavor the dish is named for and melts into the sauce as it heats.

Cocktail sauce – Adds a tangy, slightly zesty kick that keeps the sauce from tasting too sweet.

BBQ Sauce – Adds smoky, savory depth that balances the cranberry and brown sugar.

Brown Sugar – Sweetens the sauce and gives it a rich, caramel-like flavor and glossy finish.

Water – Loosens the sauce so it can coat every meatball without getting too thick or scorching.

Green onions (optional) — Adds a fresh, mild bite and a pop of color on top.

How to Make Cranberry Meatballs

Mix the sauce. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the cranberry sauce, cocktail sauce, BBQ sauce, and brown sugar until smooth. Set it aside.

Layer the slow cooker. Place the frozen meatballs in your slow cooker, then pour the sauce mixture evenly over the top so every meatball gets coated.

Add water. Pour the water over everything, this keeps the sauce from getting too thick or sticking as it cooks.

Cook. Cover and cook on high for 2–3 hours or on low for 4–5 hours, until the meatballs are heated through and the sauce has thickened slightly.

Serve. Give everything a gentle stir, garnish with diced green onions if you like, and serve straight from the slow cooker.

Pro Tips

  • Go easy on the cocktail sauce if you’re not a fan of a strong tang. Several readers have mentioned the cocktail sauce flavor can come through strong, if you’d prefer a milder, sweeter sauce, start with about half the amount (roughly 6 oz) and add more to taste.
  • Don’t thaw the meatballs first. Frozen meatballs hold their shape better in the slow cooker; thawed meatballs are more likely to fall apart by the time they’re done.
  • Keep it warm for parties. If you’re serving these as an appetizer, your slow cooker on the “warm” setting is the easiest way to keep them at serving temperature for hours without drying out.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Can I use homemade meatballs instead of frozen? Yes, fully cooked homemade meatballs work well. Add them to the sauce and heat until warmed through, which may take less time than frozen.

Can I use whole berry or jellied cranberry sauce? Yes, either works. Whole berry adds a bit of texture, while jellied melts into a smoother sauce.

Can I make this on the stovetop instead of the slow cooker? Yes, simmer everything in a large pot over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally, until the meatballs are heated through.
