Buffalo Chicken Tater Tot Casserole is the perfect mash-up of spicy buffalo flavor and crispy comfort food.

Tender shredded chicken is tossed in buffalo sauce, layered with creamy cheese, and topped with golden tater tots for a dinner that’s bold, satisfying, and family friendly.

It’s an easy weeknight meal that also works great for game day or casual gatherings.

Ingredient Notes:

  • Chicken – I used cooked chicken for this recipe. Rotisserie chicken, leftover chicken, or even chicken you cook in the slow cooker works great.
  • Sour Cream – I use sour cream, but plain Greek yogurt works as a great substitute.
  • Ranch Dressing – Ranch keeps it mild and creamy, but swap in blue cheese dressing for a bolder buffalo taste.
  • Cream of Chicken Soup – I use cream of chicken soup, but cream of mushroom or cream of celery also work.
  • Buffalo Wing Sauce – I use buffalo wing sauce, but you can use your favorite brand or make homemade. I’ll link my homemade version if you want to try it.
  • Cheddar Cheese – Sharp cheddar adds great flavor, but Colby Jack, Monterey Jack, or a Mexican blend are all delicious here.
  • Tater Tots – Add the tater tots directly on top while still frozen, no need to thaw.

Directions:

Step One – Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Prepare a 2-quart casserole dish with nonstick cooking spray.

Step Two – Mix shredded chicken with sour cream, ranch dressing, cream of chicken soup, and buffalo wing sauce. Place in the bottom of your casserole dish.

Step Three – Top chicken with shredded cheese.

Step Four – Top chicken and cheese with tater tots.

Step Five – Bake for 40-45 minutes or until cooked through and warm throughout.

  • 2 1/2 cups chicken, (cooked and shredded)
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1 cup ranch dressing
  • 10.5 oz cream of chicken soup, (1 can)
  • 1/4 cup buffalo wing sauce
  • 2 cups cheddar cheese, (shredded)
  • 22 oz tater tots, (frozen)

Instructions 

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Prepare a 2-quart casserole dish with nonstick cooking spray.

  1. My wife and I love this dish. Our friends just had a baby and we want to bring this to them so they can freeze it and have when they want. Would this freeze easy?

    1. I think this would freeze well! You could mix it and then add the tater tots and then freeze it that way before baking it.

  2. Been making this for close to 15 years. Itโ€™s still requested by my now adult children. That tells you something!! Making it this weekend per request from my son. I sometimes use canned chicken in a pinch and bake the tots first so they are super crispy.
