Buffalo Chicken Dip is my all-time favorite appetizer, and this recipe is hands down the best way to make it. It's simple and delicious and a real crowd-pleaser.

Buffalo Chicken Dip on wooden serving tray with tortilla chips and celery

I've made buffalo chicken dip a couple of hundred times. That's no execration either! It has been my favorite snack since I was in high school (and I'm old ya'll).

Pretty much every football game, every party, every event that needed food this was on the table.

This one that in these pictures I actually wrapped up and took to a ladies' night at a friend's house that night. It's the PERFECT appetizer to take to friends.

How to make Buffalo Chicken Dip:

This recipe is very easy to make. You can make it as spicy or as mild as you like depending on what kind of buffalo sauce you use, and how much you use.

Shred your cooked chicken, heat up all your other ingredients, and add in the shredded chicken. Any party or event your bring this too, it will be the first one fully gone!

    Ingredients:

    • Chicken (boneless and skinless) shredded
    • Cream Cheese (softened)
    • Ranch Dressing
    • Buffalo Sauce (add to taste)
    • Shredded Cheddar Cheese
    • Sour Cream

    ingredients for Buffalo chicken dip

    Directions:

Step one: Prepare a saucepan with non-stick cooking spray. Since you will be melting cheese it can get pretty messy so I have a pretty heavy hand when I am spraying this.

ingredients to make buffalo chicken dip in sauce pan

Step two:  Over low heat melt cream cheese, ranch dressing, buffalo sauce, and shredded cheese, and once that is melted add in chicken.

adding the shredded chicken to the dip

Step three: Mix together ingredients well then remove from heat. Add in sour cream and mix in well. At this time you can add in more buffalo sauce to taste.

    • Tips: I  prefer mine to be very spicy and we add the entire cup of sauce. You can always add more to taste once it's done.

    Cooking Tip:

For this recipe, you can used a precooked canned chicken or cook your own chicken breast and shredded it.

If you know you will be making this I suggest making my slow cooker all-purpose chicken.

You can make several breasts and use some for this and some for another recipe.

It saves me so much time to make it ahead of time when I know I will be making this or other recipes that call for pre-cooked chicken.

What Buffalo Sauce should I use?

I am a HUGE fan of Frank's Red Hot Buffalo Sauce. I love using that brand, but you can use whichever is your personal favorite as well! My personal opinion though is Frank's is one of the best Buffalo Sauces available.

You can also make your own Homemade Buffalo Sauce. I use this recipe all the time if I don't have any Buffalo Sauce on hand!

What do you serve with your Buffalo Chicken Dip?

There are two things I always have ready with this dip. It's celery sticks and tortilla chips. Just like your favorite Buffalo Wing place gives you celery to eat with the wings, you need to dip some celery in here! Carrot sticks work great too!

    My Buffalo Dip is greasy:

If your dip has a greasy or oil texture or pools in the dip, it means that your have not mixed your ingredients together well enough.

They have not fully come together and are separated in the cooking process. Put back on the stove if this is the case, heat it up and mix constantly for a few minutes.

This should help prevent the ingredients from separating.

    Buffalo Chicken Recipes:

Here are a few more of my favorite buffalo chicken recipes:

Shredded Buffalo Chicken Sandwich: This one is a favorite of mine. It's all made in the slow cooker and taste amazing.

Buffalo Chicken French Bread Pizza: This pizza is so easy to make and so full of flavor. I used a French load cut in half and loaded it up.

Crispy Baked Buffalo Chicken: This is the best way to dress up upper basic boneless skinless chicken breast!

Great recipe! I use a small slow-cooker and begin with the cream cheese, hot sauce, and ranch. Once the mixture is slightly warm I add the shredded cheese and chicken. Sour cream is added an hour before serving. I’ve had better success using (well-drained) canned chicken than rotisserie. Texture is finer and tastes just as amazing.

Can this be made in a crockpot? And is this made to be served warm or cold?

I made this with a store bought rotisserie chicken and it was amazing! Took a little longer for prep but worth it. I served with tortilla chips, baby carrots and celery sticks.

Thank you for this recipe!!! Making a buffalo chicken dip is a must for Super Bowl Sunday!! But As I was scanning multiple recipes on the web, they were all very blue cheese heavy. I love blue cheese, but we are expecting 16 people and I’m sure half aren’t about it(including my boyfriend). So this hit the nail on the head! I am going to put a small bowl of blue cheese crumbles on the side so the blue cheese lovers can add it themselves. Thank you!

Yes! You can put it back in a sauce pan and heat on low until creamy again.

That looks so good! Using canned chicken makes it seem so easy and a lot cheaper. I might try this for football this weekend!

Oh yum, we are all about everything buffalo chicken. We use ranch instead of blue cheese, but the rest is the same. I love dipping celery in it, it makes me not feel as bad when I'm eating it 😉
