I’m Jennie, a busy mom of three, and summer means we’re outside almost every weekend with the grill going and a big spread of sides covering the table.

Whether you need something cold and refreshing, warm and comforting, or just a quick dip to set out while everyone’s waiting on the food, these are my go-to BBQ side dishes that I come back to all summer long, from Memorial Day straight through to Labor Day.

How to Build the Perfect BBQ Spread

The key to a stress-free cookout is having a good mix of sides so there’s something for everyone. A cold salad, a warm comfort side, and one dip or snack to set out while the grill heats up. This will make your table feel full and balanced without you running yourself ragged in the kitchen.

FAQ Section

What BBQ sides can I make ahead of time? Almost all of the cold salads and dips on this list can be made the night before or the morning of your cookout. Pasta salads, potato salads, fluff salads, and dips all hold up great in the fridge and honestly taste even better after they’ve had a little time to sit.

How many side dishes do I need for a BBQ? A good rule of thumb is three to four sides for a casual family cookout and five or six if you’re feeding a bigger crowd. I always try to have at least one cold salad, one warm comfort side, and one dip or snack on the table.

What sides go with BBQ chicken? BBQ chicken pairs perfectly with cold creamy sides like potato salad, pasta salad, or broccoli salad. If you want something warm, cheesy corn or loaded mashed potatoes are always a hit alongside it.
